Ol’ Doc Burgess on war - no end to funding in sight

Dear Mr. Dunkelberg:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the War in Iraq. I appreciate the opportunity to hear from you on this important matter.

As you probably are aware, President Bush has announced the deployment of 21,500 additional combat troops to Iraq [forgetting to mention the support troops, which brings the total to about 50,000 and tens of thousands of mercenaries and the troops whose tours are extended to keep the lie alive and the numbers down], along with a renewed diplomatic and economic initiative. The new strategy in Iraq focuses on success through troop strength, new rules of engagement and a commitment to seeing this war through to the end. This is a plan based on solid intelligence [Well, that is a new strategy - solid intelligence - but, frankly, I don't believe it - never did.]and supported by experienced field commanders in Iraq, including Lieutenant General David Petraeus, the man responsible for killing Saddam Hussein’s sons, and Lieutenant General Raymond T. Odierno who pulled Saddam from his spider hole [and Tinkerbell who saved Peter Pan by drinking the poison].

I acknowledge the great sacrifices made by our Armed Services and their loving families back home, and I remain grateful [as my cronies and I have been able to profit from this war without a single sacrifice].. For this reason, I voiced my opinion to the President when I had the opportunity to meet with him at the White House recently; one which I believe represents the sentiment of the majority of my constituents-we should give our troops all they need to finish this war victoriously [except the armor and weaponry they need, the numbers they needed in the beginning, an uncorrupted supply line, adequate medical care, survivor benefits, a fair deal on deployments and basic respect].

Just as this Congress should never cut funding for troops while they are in the field, I believe Congress must provide funding for additional troops if that is how we are to win the war. If Congress is not willing to financially support the troop increase, then we should bring our soldiers home now[HEAR! HEAR!]. I, for one, want to win this war [although I am not willing to sacrifice my safety or treasure to do anything to bring about that victory].

I do not believe we have the luxury of achieving any other outcome short of victory [however, through lies, bungling and mismanagement, this illegal and unjustified war is sadly lost]. Strategically, a secure Iraq is imperative to improving stability in the Middle East. We must remember that this remains an ideological struggle with Islamic Jihadists [a.k.a. Civil war]. We must defeat them everywhere and especially in Iraq. The insurgents we are battling in Iraq do not want peace [and most who live there do not want us there]. They are determined individuals who use terrorist tactics and guerrilla warfare to fight against the creation of a free and stable Iraq [they should be very grateful as we are giving them what they want. Is that the way you fight an enemy? Give him what he wants?].

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate having the opportunity to represent you in the U.S. House of Representatives. Please feel free to visit my website (www.house.gov/burgess) or contact me with any future concerns.
Sincerely,

Michael C. Burgess, M.D.
