Is Scooter Libby better than Paris Hilton?

July 2nd, 2007 · No Comments · Bush, Cheney, GOP Lies, Impeach, John Cornyn, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Michael Burgess, Texas

Popey’s had it with Bush!

Okay, forget I asked that question.

However, Libby’s appeals to stay out of prison on bond basically were the same as Paris’ mournful cry - “This isn’t fair!” His howls were echoed by his A-list supporters, with “amens” chanted on right-wing talk radio by that geek chorus of felons, junkies, drug offenders and liars.

Now, for Libby’s buddies, the same offense of lying to a federal investigation was worth impeaching a president of the United States of America and almost removing him from office. However, prison is too good for one of their own goons, actually convicted by a jury of his peers (not a vitriolic, partisan lynch mob).

Republofascists and their ilk are great for show trials for their foes and love preaching about taking personal responsibility. However, when it is their turn in the dock, they cry foul. When it is time to take their punishment, they crumble into a quivering, crying, spineless heap.

Now, in one area, I actually think Scooter got a raw deal. I think the judge should have let him stay free pending appeal. It is a routinely granted requested, allowed in most criminal cases at all levels. That was a bit tough, and I really did feel for him on that. You can’t give back that time, if you are in prison and you are exonerated on appeal.

His sentence, however, was fair, if harsh. Privilege may bring power, but it does not put you above the law. Those given privilege and power under generous freedoms of the U.S.A. should be extra careful to follow the rules. Libby was not. Yes, certainly, Dick Cheney more than likely was stepping all over him like gravel in a footpath, just something underneath you to get you where you are going. However, Scooter knew what he was doing.

However, Scooter still will be disbarred, you say. He still has to pay a $250,000 fine. That doesn’t matter. His buddies can raise that much money passing the hat at a poker party. So, he can’t practice law. Do you think he will be wanting for a job and one with a significant income?

Well, what about the shame the man had to face, with all the publicity and his fall from grace. So what? Just because he fell from a higher perch does not mean his shame is more than a lowlier hood faces in his own community. Libby’s world was on national television. However, the shame felt by a person convicted of DUI or theft or prostitution is no less within their community. Those persons are far more likely to not have the rescue on which Scooter can count.

So, when it comes down to it, the only real punishment facing Libby was his prison stay. Other White House officials have endured it. Some have made a killing on it as a result. When you stink up the highest office in the land, you should have to do more than just slink out the back door.

In the meantime, some of his supporters will be hollering for a full pardon. Others will say their work is done, and move on. Many will be back screaming for blood the next time there is a call for mandatory prison time for minor drug offenders.

You get all the justice you can buy in this country - plain and simple.

Plus, Boy George Bush and his gangster buddies are selling it off cheap.
