Subject: O’Reilly distortion

It is truly unfortunate today that ad hominem attacks pass for “commentary”. However, your boy Bill has done it again.

O’Reilly: On the pinhead front far left Washington correspondent Helen Thomas put forth that the American military is targeting civilians in Iraq, and got scolded for it.

Please read the following excerpt from the above referenced press briefing and tell me where Helen Thomas says the American military is “targeting civilians”. ( the complete transcript can be found at http://usinfo.state.gov/xarchives/display.html?p=texttrans-english&y=2007&m=November&x=20071130162341eaifas0.5483515 )

Q: Does the President want no troops out from Iraq on his watch? I’m talking about all the troops.

MS. PERINO: Well, 5,700 troops will be home by the end of the year, so that is some troops coming home. The President said that troop levels are going to be made by commanders on the ground, and that we’re going to have to talk about –

Q: Why should it be? Why can’t the American people have a say?

MS. PERINO: — return on success. The American people have had a say. They elected a President who is their Commander-in-Chief and is making decisions based on what his commanders on the ground are telling him.

Q: And you think that was the vote of the American people?

MS. PERINO: They elected a Commander-in-Chief, and the President is bringing home 5,700 troops, based on the recommendations of his commanders on the ground and based on return on success. Hopefully in the future we can bring home more, but it’s going to depend on what General Piraeus reports and remember he will come back in March.

Q: Why should we depend on him?

MS. PERINO: Because he is the commander on the ground, Helen. He’s the one who is making sure that the situation is moving –

Q: You mean how many more people we kill?

MS. PERINO: Helen, I find it really unfortunate that you use your front row position, bestowed upon you by your colleagues, to make such statements. This is a — it is an honor and a privilege to be in the briefing room, and to suggest that we, at the United States, are killing innocent people is just absurd and very offensive.

Q: Do you know how many we have since the start of this war?

MS. PERINO: How many — we are going after the enemy, Helen. To the extent that any innocent Iraqis have been killed, we have expressed regret for it.

Q: Oh, regret. It doesn’t bring back a life.

MS. PERINO: Helen, we are in a war zone, and our military works extremely hard to make sure that everyone has the opportunity for liberty and freedom and democracy, and that is exactly what they are doing.

I’m going to move on.

    Re: der Dunkel Rover comment…
I would respectively disagree with the person who posted the comment about Bill O’Reilly and Ad Hominum attacks on Helen Thomas in the White House briefing room. Helen Thomas was once a very good reporter, but she should have retired a long time ago. Sometimes I wonder if she even knows where she is or what year it is. We all have to step down sometime, even though we don’t want to admit it, and Helen’s time is long over due. Secondly, she definitely has an agenda and a bias against Pres. Bush, which is common knowledge. Ms. Thomas questions were so far out of this world, it came off as jabberwocky. She made a fool of herself and would do the White House Press Corps a great service by turning in her Press badge and let a younger, brighter, experienced, articulate unbiased reporter take her place. And to answer her question: Our soldiers are fighting for our country in a war zone and don’t purposely kill civilians. But as in any war civilian casualties are an unintended fact of life. Where was Helen Thomas when our soldiers were being tortured, beheaded and hung in public display in Iraq? That’s something to be outraged about.
    …Just my two cents worth.

I understand your points. However, the question is not whether Helen Thomas is going crackers. It is BO lying about what someone said and then attacking them for saying it. It is a sorry, cheap, unscrupulous and thoroughly shameful process. He should be fired, no matter who was the target of his attack.
She did not say what BO said she said.
She did not call the president a “pinhead” (or his press secretary).
That is the point. Not only did BO stoop to an ad hominem attack. He lied about what she said.
At no point, did Ms. Thomas say our soldiers, sailors or marines were targeting civilians.
She was, I think, trying to see if the White House gives any thought to the thousands who have died in Boy George Bush’s war of lies.
    Obviously, it doesn’t.

    InReply to derDunkelRover ,
I saw the same Bill O’Reilly show you are referring to and BO did not lie about anything Helen Thomas said. He stated that she said that The White House (Pres. Bush) was “targeting civiliansin Iraq”and doesn’t care how many people die for “his war”, and for that she was a “pinhead”. A war that we did not start.
(UN Resolution 1441 authorized the invasion of Iraq). Here is part of that transcript that you also posted earlier:

I find her questions offensive and O’Reilly was right to call her out. And for that, in my opinion also, she was a pinhead.
I sense that you don’t like Bill O’Reilly or Pres. Bush, and nothing anyone can do or say will change that. That’s a shame. I’m sure you don’t actually believe (I hope) that Pres. Bush has never thought about how many people have died or been injured, and how many families it has affected because of this war and the decisions he had to make, based on our best Intel. That would have to weigh heavy on him for the rest of his life, and I doubt that he takes it lightly. As for Bill O’Reilly, I watch his show often, as apparently do millions of others, and don’t always agree with him. His show is that of Commentary and News Analysis, and at least he will have people with opposing points of view present their case and have back and forth dialogue on the topics of the day. Then, as always, he leaves it to the viewer to decide who is right or wrong. Fair and balanced. His segment called “Pinheads and Patriots” is rather entetaining, as well as enlightening. He certainly has done nothing to warrant being fired. To the contrary, he makes you think! If you don’t like his show, then don’t watch it.
I doubt that we’ll ever come to agreement on this subject, but I respect your opinion. And I think you and I could have a very interesting and lively debate if we were to meet in person.
Take care, sir. And God bless!

    Thanks for your comments, honestly.
Once again, perhaps BO and others can interpret Thomas’ remarks as saying Coalition forces are targetting civilians.
However, that is not what she said. If you believe her comments deserve condemnation, then obviously they are bad enough that you do not have put words in her mouth.
To lit about what a person says and them attack them for it is nothing but the basest form of propaganda and hate tactics.
If the comments seemed looney to you , say so.
If the comments were disrespectful, say so.
If you lie in order to attack, you are beneath contempt and apparently unsure of your case.
Finally, yes, sadly, I do not think the deaths of U.S. service personnel, coalition forces, contractors or civilians prey that much on the mind of the White House. For one thing, if they were so concerned, they would have given the troops proper armor, weapons and support before putting them into the field. The Bush regime is working on an agenda and that is all that matters to them.
