What Rep. Burgess actually said about the Humane Society and the beef recall

The audio above is Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), in his opening statement during a congressional hearing on food safety. Rep.Burgess is right. he was one of only two Texas GOP house members to vote in favor of the horse slaughter ban. In that recording, however, he was taking the Humane Society to task over its handling of the video that led to the recent record recall of beef.
According to the New York Times story, the Humane Society says the delay was not of its making. It says it immediately turned over the video to state prosecutors. When nothing had been done after four months, the Humane Society went public.
Rep. Burgess sounds hurt by an old friend in his remarks. However, if the Humane Society can count him as a friend in Congress, why wouldn’t one ask such questions of a friend in private? Don’t you give your friends a chance to explain first? Don’t you give your friends the benefit of the doubt? Had he done so, Rep. Burgess might have saved himself some embarrassment.
Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer also was hard on the Humane Society, according to the New York Times.
His criticism echoed a point made last week by Ed Schafer, the secretary of agriculture, who said he was “extremely disappointed” in the Humane Society. He complained that “for four months, theoretically, animals were not being properly treated, and the Humane Society stood by and allowed it to happen.”
The Bush Administration is caught, again, not doing its job. Its allies turn on the messenger, while one still calls that messenger friend.
