Well, McCain sure shows good decision making abilities here.
CBS) Today, it was Republican frontrunner John McCain’s turn to answer mounting questions about one of his supporters, Rev. John Hagee, a San Antonio pastor with a worldwide broadcast ministry, reports CBS News senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield.Hagee has offered some highly provocative views on a variety of subjects.
For instance, he linked Hurricane Katrina to the gay rights movement: ” … All of the city was punished because of the sin that happened there in that city.”
He has also denounced the Roman Catholic Church as “the great whore of Babylon” and “a cult.” He blames it for the Holocaust and predicts its imminent demise.
“This is the apostate church,” Hagee said. ” … this false religious system is going to be totally devoured by the anti-Christ.”
In a statement, Catholics United said: “We hope Senator McCain will take the principled position of publicly and unequivocally distancing himself from Pastor Hagee’s anti-Catholic comments.”
And Bill Donahue of the Catholic League offered a tougher view: “I do want a clear-cut statement from McCain saying that he knows Catholics have been offended, when this man hagee calls my religon the great whore and a false cult system.” Read the rest of the CBS story
In the meantime, Hagee continues fleecing his flock, while pulling in millions for his tax-exempt organization.
While openly political, Hagee’s church has enjoyed the protection of Godfather Boy George. He has been free from invetigation, while the IRS has targeted even mainstream churches for “political activity”. Supposedly, you get your tax exempt status yanked for political activity. You see how well that’s working, don’t you?
The Bible says - “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:24
Perhaps there is justice for Hagee and his ilk after all.
UPDATE: Eventually, the outcry and fallout from this endorsement was too much for both men. They couldn’t stand the heat and shut down the kitchen. McCain denounced Hagee and Hagee said he was withdrawing his endorsement.
This means McCain:
- did not vet Hagee and his enterprise before he invested
- flip flopped on the good preacher’s goodness
- simply screwed it all up from Day One
- was practicing for his vice president pick
By the way, Texas Senator John Cornyn was on the stage smiling and applauding this endorsement. He has not said one word about it since. You may make of that what you will.
