McCAIN GOT PROSTITUTES NOT PRISON

Pakistan’s Pervez Musharraf has until now stubbornly resisted pressure to quit.

Musharraf told the nation in a televised address that he would step down — nearly nine years after he seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999.

“I don’t want the people of Pakistan to slide deeper and deeper into uncertainty,” Musharraf said.

“For the interest of the nation, I have decided to resign as president,” he said. “I am not asking for anything. I will let the people of Pakistan decide my future.” Watch Musharraf resign »

He was expected to turn in his resignation to parliament Monday. Musharraf quit as the ruling coalition was taking steps to impeach him.

Local media reports said he had been granted “safe passage” out of the country.

Musharraf has been a keen ally of the West in the fight on terror, receiving billions in military aid from the U.S. and launching attacks on militant groups near the country’s border with Afghanistan. Watch more on Musharraf’s departure »

In a statement released by U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe, President George W. Bush said it was committed to a “strong Pakistan that continues its efforts to strengthen democracy and fight terror.”

“President Bush appreciates President Musharraf’s efforts in the democratic transition of Pakistan as well as his commitment to fighting Al Qaeda and extremist groups,” the statement said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said he had been a “friend to the United States” and one of the “most committed partners in the war against terrorism and extremism.”

I have yet to figure out if Condi is clueless or just a very bad liar (not a popular trait in the Boy George administration where lying is a key people skill).

For Pete’s sake, the guy was put in place by an army coup. That’s not “extremism”? Musharraf ruled by terror and extremism and good riddance. He was dealing with the Taliban and possibly al Qaeda for a truce; that was his war on terror.

Good riddance!

The real shame here is that Pakistan’s parliament is showing up the U.S. Congress in spades on how to deal with abuse of power and illegal activities by an executive power. Maybe we someday will embrace democracy here as Pakistan has now embraced it.

I hope somebody counts the silverware before Boy George leaves the White House.

If he is shocked, why haven’t we heard anything? I mean his campaign has made an art of taking statements made in poor taste, off-color humor, hate speak and other “gaffes”, apologizing to make them go away and having it accepted. At the same time, McCain knows his appeal to the lowest common denominator has worked and the statement will stick with those for whom it was meant.

So, don’t expect Republicans to line up to denounce this filthy collection of lies and bigotry. If they do, they will shedding crocodile tears that someone who supports them could be so vile (and helpful).

Phil Gramm Attends McCain Campaign Briefing

Ousted John McCain campaign co-chairman Phil Gramm is back with the campaign’s top advisers this weekend, as the campaign gathers top supporters for a series of briefings in scenic Aspen, Colo.

The former Texas senator stepped down from his position after he said in an interview last month that the country is in a “mental recession” and that we had become a “nation of whiners.”

Gramm was seated in the front row, with other top supporters, this afternoon as McCain addressed the Aspen Institute in a “conversation” with Walter Isaacson, president of the institute and a former editor of Time magazine.

Notice how the little guy has to pay for his mistakes, while Boy George Bush’s administration goes out of its way to rescue the rich and powerful from their greedy mistakes?

Notice how the McCain/Bush campaign makes a lot of noise about no new taxes, which means giving the richest of Americans a pass while the rest of our taxes support their tax cuts?

The latest came in an unannounced stop of the McCain/Bush campaign at a Pittsburgh, PA, restaurant.  A reporter asked McCain about an Associated Press story concerning U.S. trade with Iraq.

Despite increasingly tough rhetoric toward Iran, which President Bush has called part of an “axis of evil,” U.S. exports to the country grew more than tenfold during Bush’s years in office - even as he accused it of nuclear ambitions and sponsoring terrorists.

Cigarettes, the reporter said, topped the list

With $73 million, the value of cigarettes sold to Iran was more than twice that of the No. 2 category on the export list - vaccines, serums and blood products.

“Maybe that’s a way of killing ‘em,” Senator McCain said.

What happened next is not reported in all accounts, but it was at www.theage.com (and other places).

His wife, Cindy, sitting next to him, poked him in the back,

It was then he added:

“I meant that as a joke, as a person who hasn’t had a cigarette in 28 years.”

Cindy corrected him again.  It’s been 29 years.

However, McCain has yet to come out and apologize to the tobacco industry and tobacco lobby and tobacco farmers.  After all, he made a great GOP slip in linking cigarettes with death.  That could cost him . . literally.  Those sessions most likely will occur behind closed doors.

Of course this brings to mind the ever popular McCain cover the Beach Boys “Barbara Ann” with his own words - “Bomb! Bomb! Bomb! Bomb! Bomb Iran.”

Another joke, the campaign insisted.

However many of McCain’s followers who are far from warm and fuzzy and must lap  this stuff up like beer.  It shows his tough guy image without having to call his wife profane names or grab someone by the collar.

Oh, but he apologized.  That makes all the difference in the world.  See, he isn’t so bad after all, he didn’t mean it. (Wink! Wink! Nudge! Nudge!)

In the end, he gets it both ways.  To some is the elderly gentleman who mispoke.  That’s fine; we’ve become used to that.  At the same time is the hero of the hell hath no fury like a demagogue scorned club and the “stomp around and strike with a big stick” crowd.

By the way, Sen. Barack Obama  response was:

“It’s that kind of mixed signal that has led to the kind of situation that we’re in right now,” Obama said Wednesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Pretty obvious he wasn’t going for laughs, but it’s possible the straight man/woman didn’t set him up right.

I wonder what McCain would have said had the reported quoted the following to him about our trade with Iran under Boy George Bush?

U.S. government figures showed at least $148,000 worth of unspecified weapons and other military gear were exported to Iran during Bush’s terms.

However, a review found that $106,635 in military rifles and $8,760 in rifle parts and accessories shipped in 2004 actually went to Iraq.
